You've seen one today. You probably heard one before you even got out of bed. The house sparrow is just... there.

But here's the thing. This bird has been living alongside humans for ten thousand years. It followed the first farmers across Europe, got shipped to new continents by homesick colonisers, and was once the target of a state-ordered mass extermination in China that helped trigger one of the worst famines of the twentieth century.

And right now, in the cities where it's always lived, it's quietly disappearing.
