I have heard that there are potentially as many definitions of leadership as there are people on this planet. Yet, of all the possible definitions, my favorite has to be this: Leadership is Influence. Another favorite definition is the idea that you are only a leader if you have followers. I remember it well...I was surfing LinkedIn, doing some research for my next article, when out of the blue, I saw a video that both entertained and educated in the most profound way. I watched and watched again, as an educator, with her low-key, soothing tone, taught her friends, colleagues and followers, a lesson about leadership in both English and Arabic. It was enchanting!

The full extent of my surprise came a bit later, when I discovered that this teacher had over 277,000 followers on LinkedIn. A feat that is undeniable,  commendable, and achieved by only a few. I wanted to learn how she did this, so I invited her to speak with us. To my delight, she accepted. This was going to be a rare chance to learn from the quiet, almost spiritual style of Dr. Abir El Shaban.

I learned today, about a beautiful line from a Maya Angelou poem called 'To Our Grandmothers'. My teacher, a guest on our podcast, shared the line with me in her signature, calm voice: "I come as one, but I stand as 10,000." She explained to me how that single, goose-bump inducing line was the inspiration for her business, her movement, and her 'why' on this planet. It was very refreshing and enlightening to hear the effect this singular saying had on my guest. Maya Angelou would be proud.

Sometimes you just know someone is having the time of their life. You can just see it in their smile, their bounce, their swag. This person loves life! That's the impression I had when I first saw a gentleman on LinkedIn, dancing, swaying, rapping, and having so much authentic joy and fun in his song video. 

Little did I know this was the Chief Operating Officer of a highly successful entrepreneurial concern, and a top LinkedIn influencer as well. Many of us would probably agree that happiness comes from within. Many of us would also agree that it is folly to continuously seek happiness from the acquisition of external things. And far too many of us have perhaps already experienced that crushing feeling when you thought you had that material thing you were seeking, but you still felt miserable inside. 

Perhaps we could look at happiness differently. Perhaps, as my next guest taught me, perhaps happiness is much MORE than something within us. In his words, Happiness is ALREADY ours. It is our very nature, and the true folly and mistake is in ever thinking otherwise. We just need to become aware, mindful, and take ownership of what is already ours.
