Great novel for adventure lovers and history buffs
Who doesn't love a good adventure story? This novel is an updated version of Alexander Francis Baillie's 1887 novel, A Paraguayan treasure. The story offers a vivid description of an expedition into the Paraguayan interior, as the narrator searchers for treasurer. There is also a good historical perspective of class differences and race relations in late nineteenth-century Paraguay. The editor has revised the book to use updated geographic names and simpler writing--while maintaining the tone and flavor of the original novel.
Oldie but a Goodie.
A vivid rendition of travel in 1880's Paraguay. The book is multi-dimentional, not just focused on the treasure, but on friends, espionage, adventure borne romance, the socio-economic state of Paraguay, and how to deal with corrupt officials. It also provides a wonderful insight of how life was for a rich British aristocrat in 1880s. The most engaging part of the story was the first hand description of the culture in Paraguay as of 1880s. Clearly the original author was a naturalist and had been there. Two thumbs up!
