I have one rule of thumb when it comes to receiving advice: 

Never take advice from someone who is not on your level. 

So many people want to have a say in what you do, how you do it, and with whom you do it, but the fact of the matter is, most people don't know what the fuck they're doing.

What makes them qualified to tell you what you should do?

Arrogance? 

Ego? 

An inherent need to be heard? 

A need for validation or relevance? 

Sense of belonging? 

Don't take advice from people who haven't done what you're trying to do.

A good example is my parents. 

They're not bad people, but they were W-2 employees. 

They didn't know anything about how to run a business. 

I don't ask the butcher how to do my taxes. 

I ask a CPA or tax accountant.

Raising children..........I don't take advice from people who have never raised children. 

We have to be careful of who we take advice from.

While they mean well, they very well could be leading us down a path they themselves have never been qualified to walk on. 

Listen closely. 

Choose your advisors wisely. 

Success leaves clues to those who should be allowed to tell you what and how to do what you want to do.
