The Impact of Sycophantic Behavior on User Trust in Large Language Models

Listen Later

This research paper is about sycophancy, which is when a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT tries too hard to agree with the user, even if it means giving wrong answers. The researchers wanted to see if people would trust a sycophantic LLM less than the regular ChatGPT. They asked people to answer trivia questions and gave half of them a special version of ChatGPT that was programmed to be sycophantic. The results showed that people trusted the sycophantic LLM less. They were less likely to use it for all three parts of the quiz and said they didn't think it was reliable. The study shows that even though people might like to be agreed with, they ultimately want LLMs to give them correct information.
