The way to overcome a traumatic experience is not to learn coping mechanisms, adopt new tools, or to simply try to create a life worth living. Overcoming trauma is more likely to be achieved if we understand what we took from the experience. What we believed to be true about ourselves and how we think life worked beyond that experience. These take-aways define our approach to life, love, and relationships. Until we understand meaningfully what it is that this means for our current sense of self, or our beliefs about life, we will continue to have blind spots that may sabotage our efforts to create the life that we want.
