Regionalism vs. Multilateralism: A Brief Commentary By Akshay Patel Regionalism and multilateralism are two key approaches to international trade policy. Regionalism involves countries forming trade agreements like Free Trade Areas (FTAs) and Customs Unions, while multilateralism is a broader approach under institutions like the World Trade Organization (WTO), aiming for global trade liberalization.FTAs and Customs Unions are central to regionalism. FTAs, such as NAFTA (now USMCA), eliminate tariffs between member states but allow them to set independent external trade policies. Customs Unions, like the EU, go further by adopting a common external tariff. These agreements facilitate trade creation, where trade shifts to more efficient producers within the bloc, boosting economic welfare. However, they can also lead to trade diversion, where trade moves from a more efficient global supplier to a less efficient regional one due to preferential tariffs.Multilateralism, on the other hand, promotes trade liberalization on a global scale, reducing barriers without discrimination.
