The Inspirational Story of Madame Clofullia

Josephine Boisdechene was born in 1829 in Versoix, Switzerland and was America's first famous bearded woman.   


In 1853 Clofullia brought her family to America, joining P.T. Barnum's American Museum in New York. Barnum billed her as ‘The Bearded Lady of Geneva’ had her beard officially measured as 6 inches long in a publicity stunt designed to draw people into his venue.   


Madame Clofullia died in 1875, aged just 54.
