In the summer of 2007, Luna's cousin Delia bought a farmhouse at auction on Pringle Creek Road, a gravel stretch outside the town of Osage, Iowa. The house had been empty for twenty years, but the realtor said it was 'clean' — which is what they say when they don't want you to look inside the attic. Delia asked Luna to help clean the place out before she moved in. They found a Mason jar in the crawlspace under the eaves. Inside were teeth. Not animal teeth — human molars, canines, incisors, with roots still attached. Some had cavities. Some had fragments of gold filling. The jar was sealed, but the lid was loose, and when Luna turned it in the flashlight beam, she saw something that made her set it down very carefully. Delia didn't sleep in that house. Neither did Luna.
