This week my guest on Sod’s Law is Mark Halawa.
It wasn’t planned to have Mark on the show at the same time as an ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, but it's a fantastic conversation from a unique perspective.
Mark was born in Kuwait to Palestinian secular muslim parents and whilst he always new his maternal grandmother was originally Jewish, he thought this made no difference to his own identity.
After meeting a Jew in Canada in his early twenties, he was told that this made his mother and therefore him and his siblings all Jews according to Jewish Law - a strange thing to hear when you’ve been brought up to despise Israel, its people and everything it stands for...
