A fictional account of a typical small town American family facing hard decisions after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan. Being forced to navigate the difficult days which would shape the course of their lives, this coming of age family story typifies those events that were played out in many small towns across the United States during World War II. Written in a style to take the reader on a historical journey that highlights American families of the Greatest Generation, the story follows the hardships that must be endured in order to earn ultimate victory. This is the first in a series that will cover the entire period of World War II and its effect on the Johnson family and how they worked to overcome the trials and tragedies that are a part of war when awaiting news of family from far flung battlefields.
Members Reviews:
Accurate picture of an era.
Basically, this family history follows the often rocky journey of brothers, Ray and Jimmy into the Marine Corps and Army Air Corp, respectively.
Along the way, the author included details and vignettes that capture the U.S. of the early nineteen forties and the language and mind set of a Southern family. Details like a blue star flag in the window, a three dollar sheet of 100 stamps, the fact that Rayâs expert marksmanship earns him an additional five dollars per month, raising his Marine Corps monthly pay to twenty-six dollars bring the early WWII era to life.
As Mr. Cromlish says in his epilog, the Johnson family epitomizes the generation of Americans shaped by the great depression and determined to defeat their countryâs enemies.
Couldn't Put It Down
Throughout the story, I felt like I was a part of the Johnson Family. I couldn't put it down & can't wait to read the next installment. Keep up the great work of bringing history to life.

Meh
I was disappointed with this book to say the least. I love a great war book but this one missed the mark by a mile. I recommend you pass on this one.
