One of the hardest parts of being a coach for dads is feeling like I can show the good and the bad of my own life.  

It's been a hard year. 

But that is the reality for all of us - there are inevitably highs and lows. 

The truth is that 2023 has so far been incredibly tough. And that's ok. 

One of my favourite movie quotes is from Balboa, when Rocky is talking to his son. "Life ain't all sunshine and rainbows but it ain't about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep going." 

Challenges are inevitable. 

Sure, if you are the President or Elon Musk, then some of your challenges will be bigger, but they won’t likely be much different.

The idea that we are different or that no one else will understand is just a story - a trap - that we created for ourselves. Everyday challenges we will all face, no matter how successful we are. Our children going to secondary/high school, family illness, and relationship challenges. The same shit happens to all of us.

It is how you face it that matters. 

So how do we weather the storm? 

What do we need to do to keep moving forward? 

And how do we keep smiling through it all so we can be the man and dad we need to be to everyone around us?

You have to respect the reality of it. It’s not about creating the perfect life. It is about how you deal with the challenges as you face them.

The core principles of my POWER CODE method are right at the heart of how you make that happen:

Clarity about where you are headed.

Confidence and self-assured - believing in yourself and what you are capable of.

Being consistent with your routines, your health, your sleep, and your downtime.

It is being organised. Chaos just leads to more chaos. Momentum is where results come from.

Putting good people around you.

Making time to relax, laugh, and let it all fade into the background.

Of all the people you need to look after, you are the most important.

Not in a selfish way.... it is so you can be more for others.

A strong, confident, fulfilled man who is connected to who he is and what he is up to.

When all is said and done, you have to be able to take a breath and appreciate yourself.

But how do you create moments like that for yourself?

To actually STOP and enjoy the beer, the moment on your bike, or the sunset you have sat down to watch.

It is in that moment that you High Five Yourself and say "I'm the fucking man".

Get it right, and it should give you a buzz right down your spine.

The final part of the POWER CODE process and the final element of R for REWARD is 'High Five Yourself'.

This powerful practice tops off your day, your week, month or year.

It centres you on your vision and the progress you are making.

In a way it is meditation and gratitude, BUT... the modern dad way.

It's not a complicated process or something to learn. It is about being with yourself.

It is a reset and a springboard into your next success...

Too many men fail to prioritise fun, which includes relaxing, as part of their path to success.

Do you have the relationship of your dreams or a relationship that is killing you?

Sadly, for too many men it is the latter. 

Men feel.....

...walked over.

...taken for granted.

...unappreciated.

Even an average relationship is a shocking drain on your energy and emotions. It draws you into a life of accepting second best. 

But you must realise that responsibility does start with you.

The only things you should focus on are those that you can change.

There are many reasons why a relationship stops working, but it is generally around these three elements. 

1. A clear vision for the life you want - not just the relationship.

2. Communication that works and is not loaded with unspoken frustration.

3. Intimacy that leaves you feeling valued and connected.

The biggest mistake you can make as a man in a relationship is to believe that it is not your responsibility for how your relationship is going. 

The second biggest mistake is focusing all your efforts on trying to fix the relationship, without working on yourself first. 

Your masculine strength is vital, and you find it in your own clarity and confidence. 

Men give up too much of their masculine energy and then can't understand why nothing they do seems to make a difference or leaves them feeling appreciated. 

It's not about being the boss of the relationship but it's about being the boss of you.

Clear in your vision.

Strong in your decisions and actions.

Committed and supportive in your relationship. 

Happy and confident in who you are.

Your mission is to find and bring your masculine energy into your relationship.

If you know exactly what you want, figuring out how to get it shouldn't be too difficult.

That is the importance of having a clear vision of your future and the confidence to make it happen.

The real challenge is actually doing the work. And that is where most men get stopped.

The secrets of success are not that secret, it's just that most won't do what is required.

For Dads hitting midlife, too many of our routines and habits simply don't work.

It's not about succeeding or failing. It's about having it all.

Success at home and work.

A fit body and a good relationship with our children.

Time for our wife and time with our friends.

Making it happen is not impossible.

It's about balance, and it's about doing what is required.

"Do The Work" is the W in my POWER CODE method for mid-life Dads who want to take back control of their life.

It's about routines and habits - good ones!

That does not mean slogging away with unsustainable regimes.

I'm talking about the building blocks of real success and fulfillment.

Putting the right people around you will lift you up and drive you forward.

The wrong people will hold you back, and then drag you down.

This could sound a bit heavy..... so let's focus on the positives!

Jim Rohn (someone I consider a mentor of mine) said, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. They determine what conversations dominate your attention, and they shape who you are."

Quite honestly, at certain times, that would include Laura, the receptionist at my gym, and Bartak, who works evenings at Lidl!

Good friends, a loving family, experienced mentors, and trusted partners. This is the kind of network that will help you fulfil your potential and achieve your dreams.

Bizarrely, too many men decide to do the lone wolf route. They are too busy to involve others. They just need to push on.

Or they join a business mastermind and muddle along in their relationship.

Prioritising one area over another is not enough.

Because when you start to struggle in one area, you fall down in all.

That is why you must pay close attention to the ENGAGE stage of the POWER CODE. The quality of the people you put around you is vital.

In the coming episodes, we'll talk about your love life and your relationship with your children.

Today, it's about your friends and mentors. When you win, it is better to celebrate with others. And if you're heading towards rock bottom, you better be sure you won't hit it on your own.

Who am I being? When did you last ask yourself that question?

It's not a question people normally ask themselves.

I didn't ask myself it until I was 32!!

I thought who I was, was just me. If the day went well, that was great. And if it was shit, then tomorrow would be better.

"Who am I being?" is a ridiculously powerful level of personal awareness.

When you can notice who you are being - or 'how you are being' if that works better for you - then you have the power to change it.

The power to influence those around you and shift the energy in any situation.

Who you are being is felt by everyone around you. Whether you mean it or not, they pick up on it and it determines the flavour of every moment.

When you are not aware of who you are being, it can be carnage.

Think of someone being shy at a party. What is your experience of them? What is their experience of you?

Now think of someone loud at the same party. Ask yourself the same questions.

When I start working with dads, they often believe their experience of certain people, situations, and general day-to-day life is just the way it is.

They don't see themselves in the middle of every one of those moments. Nor have they considered they are at the source of how those situations go.

It's not that being a different way will miraculously transform every moment. Believe me, it does happen, but most importantly, you begin to experience yourself as a different person.

The flavour of life and the response of others shifts

And that is where the transformation and personal power start to come from.
