In this episode, I am joined Lucie Waldman, the author of “The Jots of Becoming: A Journey of Hope and Recovery,” where she offers readers narratives and insights after fully recovering from Anorexia Nervosa. Lucie includes recovery pieces that intersect with the Jewish holidays and considers herself a Jewish recovery advocate. She is passionate about being part of the change of the recovery community and hopes to inspire others that full recovery is possible. Lucie also runs an Eating Disorder Recovery awareness and support account on Instagram (@lucie_shedding_layers). In addition to writing and advocacy work, Lucie enjoys speaking for other podcasts and mediums about the intersection between Judaism and Mental Health and is deeply passionate about mental health, Eating Disorder recovery, and equities in the treatment setting after her own experiences.
Topics Discussed:
• The ways in which sharing your eating disorder and recovery experience can be a large part of your healing.
• How labeling people as “chronic” can create harmful message of defectiveness and further validate feelings of being unable to recover.
• Finding ways to recover “differently.”
• The importance of teamwork and self-motivation when creating an alternative treatment plan.
• The ways in which the dietary restrictions in Judaism can complicate the recovery process.
• How compounding years of behaviors can lead to severe medical complications in relapse and post-recovery.
• How recovery communities offer connection that can offset the isolating nature of eating disorders.
• How Lucie uses social media as a means to create a supportive, healing environment.
