The Joy of Knowing Our Powerful Father

Listen Later

David has fled from Jerusalem because his life is in danger.  His son Absalom has come to take the throne from David and that would include putting his father to death.  This was a real Game of Thrones.

Yesterday, we saw the song David wrote about that day in the morning when he fled for his life.  Today, we read the song he sang that night where his faith is strong and he realizes that his Father is in control of all things.

“Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have relieved me in my distress;
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

O sons of men, how long will my honor become a reproach?
How long will you love what is worthless and aim at deception? Selah.
 But know that the Lord has set apart the godly man for Himself;
The Lord hears when I call to Him.

Tremble, and do not sin;
Meditate in your heart upon your bed and be still. Selah.
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,
And trust in the Lord.

Many are saying, "Who will show us any good?
"Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!
You have put gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
In peace, I will both lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.”

David has a knowledge that few of us fully possess.  He believed God would take care of him.  We first saw it burst on the scene when as a young boy around the age of 11 he shows up at the front line of the army of Israel as they are cowering in their sandals and nauseated by the bad breath of the giant Goliath. For 40 days Goliath has called for anyone to come forth and fight him to the death with absolutely no takers.

However, David does not even flinch.  Who does this uncircumcised Philistine think he is? Insulting the God of the Universe who is all powerful all the time.  So, David comes out, appearing to be the 90-pound weakling and Goliath taunts him, not knowing those words would be the last he would ever speak.  As one smooth stone enters his tiny frontal lobe the power of the God of Israel becomes his final thought as he falls flat only to have his head removed by his own sword in the hands of this little shepherd boy.

This is the power of the God David worshipped.  This is the same sovereign God who watches over our every breath and every thought. God the Father from whose presence we are never able to vacate because His Spirit dwells in our bodies plus the Father and the Son have made their “abode” with us.  He is Sovereign.  He is Almighty.  He manages the universe and holds us in His hand.

We should be a people who never live in fear trembling at the evil we see around us. We should be living with a boldness that flows from a real faith and knowledge of who our Father, our Lord and our Comforter is.  We are the Church, the body of Christ and the gates of hell shall not prevail against us.

Remember;

“You have put gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
In peace, I will both lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety”
