The Judgement Of God (Romans 2:1-16)
Although we long for justice, injustice is common in our world. The gospel gives us the good news that God has a day of wrath, when he will bring perfect justice. But it’s easy to fall into a false sense of security, to think that God will never hold us to account for our sins. We presume on God’s kindness, thinking God’s judgment will never come to us, instead of turning from our sins to Jesus, the only one who can save us. Romans 2 helps us to be clear about what will happen on judgement day, so that we can warn others, and be ready ourselves.

Introduction: Misplaced Confidence
Context
1. God’s judgement will be inescapable: There is no excuse (1–5)
a. No excuse for hypocrites (1–3)
b. No escape for presumption (4–5)
2. God’s judgement will be righteous: Based on what we have done (6–11)
a. God’s one standard (6–8)
b. For both Jews & Gentiles (9-11)
c. Judgement by works, not justification by works (cf. 1:16–17; 3:9–12)
3. God’s judgement will be impartial: equally applied to Jews & Gentile
(12–16)
a. Knowing God’s law does not exempt you (12–13)
b. Ignorance of God’s law does not exempt you (14–16)
c. So why is God’s judgement good news? (16)
i. It means that ultimate justice will be done
ii. It means that life has ultimate meaning
iii. It stops us from trusting in ourselves
Conclusion
1) Will you admit that you deserve God’s judgement and cannot save yourself?
2) Will you trust in Jesus alone?
