We have been studying Matthew 23 and Jesus’ denunciation of the false shepherds of Israel. In verses 13-33 Jesus lays out eight indictments of the scribes and the Pharisees which help us understand the wickedness of man-made religion. Jesus indicts the shepherds of Israel with... 1. Closing the Kingdom (v. 13) 2. Preying on the vulnerable (v. 14) 3. Indoctrinating in error (v. 15) 4. Encouraging prevarication (v. 16-22) 5. Majoring on the minors (v. 23-24) 6. Practicing externalism (v. 25-26) 7. Ignoring inner purity (v. 27-28) 8. Persecuting God’s spokesmen (v. 29-33) After condemning what these false shepherds do in verses 13-14 (closing the kingdom / preying on the vulnerable), Jesus now condemns how they do it in verses 15-28. Specifically this morning we will look at the third indictment - v. 15 (Indoctrinating in error) and be reminded of the deadly effect of false teaching, which is countered only by massive and regular doses of the life-giving power of the Gospel of Christ.
