On December 31, 1978, a Safe Air cargo plane crew, along with an Australian television team onboard, witnessed mysterious glowing objects tracking their aircraft near Kaikoura. The lights were captured on radar, filmed on broadcast-quality video, and confirmed by multiple witnesses, including air traffic controllers.

The objects appeared as bright, pulsating orbs that changed color, performed sharp maneuvers, and at times looked massive in size. The New Zealand government and scientific agencies investigated but found no definitive explanation, dismissing theories such as stars, fishing boat lights, or weather anomalies.
