The violin
I liked the book very much. It has well developed characterization, suspense, mystery but parts that are tragic. It tells about a boy and his love for the violin, and his passion for baseball. This conflict of not being allowed to have both forces him to choose, which begins a long journey for him as he learns about his grandfather and great grandfather's life before and during their time in the concentration camp, These two people are great violinists, the younger one, Simon, is only a young teenager at the time. Other very important players are vital in this story as a particular violin is recognized by one while being played at an international competition. Amonst the horror of some, there are great and caring personalities and you will immediately recognize some of them at first and others later.
Okay for $1.99 but I certainly wouldn't pay more
The story is relatively good but I've read much better prose. What really got to me was the Russian names - if you are going to write a story with Russian characters then PLEASE get the names right. Once I came across the first misinterpretation of a Russian name, it threw me. Then I came across another and it was completely distracting. If you are not familiar with Russian names, then this won't bother you, but the this incorrect naming showed the author's lack of research when it comes to Russian names and it got to the point where I had to start skipping pages. It's like a British author who writes a book that takes place in America with American characters but uses British idioms throughout. The inaccuracy distracts from the story.
Love of music
I would recommend this book to others I happen to be drawn to the stories of hardship created by the holocaust. The history is the same but the stories of strength and survival are different and give encouragement to others .
Permeated with the Love of Music
The story of a boy, a family, and a violin. Well written and fascinating story that involved many unforgettable characters and locales - from Italy to Germany, Russia and the United States. the chapters leading up to and in the Concentration camps were difficult but important to read as they are essential to the story. A touch of mystery and suspense adds to the telling of the story. Music and the love of music permeates this book and the reader should listen to some wonderful music for the violin as she reads.
This is an interesting book written about a lost violin ...
This is an interesting book written about a lost violin, on the surface, but much deeper than that is the history of the treatment of Jews by Nazis in Germany, etc. Not a light read, but in the end a heartwarming story. The writing style is a sometimes confusing because of the way it jumps back in time to 1930's and then back the present, etc.
