In his haste to depart the ship, Blair accidentally took with him the key to the crow’s nest locker, believed to contain binoculars intended for use by the lookouts. The lookouts later testified that binoculars would have allowed them to see the iceberg sooner, perhaps even in time to avoid the collision.
