Still reeling from the trunk’s mirror showing her grandmother’s face instead of her own, Luna holds the key and faces the woman wearing her face in the Beech Street basement. The shadow child stirs as the woman insists the reflection was the truth, not a trick. Luna examines the key—older than the others, etched with a date from before the town’s founding. The woman leads her to a hidden staircase behind a false wall, descending into a root cellar where the third lamp’s fire burns beneath a grate. There, Luna finds a journal in her grandmother’s handwriting, but the final entry is dated after her grandmother’s death. As she reads aloud, the woman’s voice joins hers in unison, and the shadow child begins to laugh. Luna must decide whether to use the key on a locked iron box beside the fire, knowing it might free the shadow child or seal her fate forever.
