The Key Tool to Guide Your Business

Listen Later

If you are feeling burnt out, or you’re being inconsistent, you may have a problem in the vision in your business.

When I hear the word vision, I think a lot about the future. When we create a vision board, or speak about our vision, it usually means that we are thinking about what is to come.

But that’s only one side of the coin. If you don’t take time to examine what you are bringing to the table and what experiences you’ve had in the past, you are only looking at half of the equation.

Vision in your business is the same thing. There are two parts to it.

1) The vision that you have for yourself
2) The vision that you have of your customers

So where do we start?

I want you to get really clear on who you are as a person. The key is authenticity. It’s who you are as a person. Which is why personal brands work. When you start to hide who it is that you are, you are cutting off the essential energy that makes you the very best person to do what it is you need to do.

The next step is to get clear on who you are serving.

A lot of times this is where people get stuck. I’ve been taught over and over again that you need to have ONE person in mind when you are working on who you are serving and your offer. And too many times that is determined by demographics statistics.

When determining the audience that you speak to or serve, you should focus on their value systems as a community and how it relates to your industry. In portrait photography, it doesn’t matter what color a person’s hair is, but that may be different for someone in a different industry, where that’s very important. Such as a stylist or wig maker.

This removes that block that you cannot serve a wide range of people. Treat your audience as a community with like minded values, not the same shoe size.

It’s important to fall in love with who you are wanting to serve. Do the work to understand them. You do need to know things about them. This is where that connection is made. What do they like, what are they passionate about, what do they spend their time doing? This is far more important.

To start getting really clear on your brand vision, ask yourself these four questions:

1) How do you want to identify as a brand?

2) How do you want to show up visually in your brand?

3) Who are you serving?

4) Why are you the best person to serve them?
