When the Postal Service stopped the Mail Trains, They killed Train-Man Brown.
A Top 100 Free for Kindle Story... called "A True Gem..."
I was only 17 - a white kid green as they come - when I first met Walker Brown. Everybody called him "Train-Man Brown" or just "Train-Man". Not Trainman" - that was too soft. The emphasis was on "Man". A black man, he had evidently kicked more than a few butts in his lifetime of working in the moving mail cars, and had earned quite of bit of respect along the way. It was assumed he was crazy - but I never believed it, not for a moment.
And he was the only one who would help me, as I struggled to do my best on what some people called "The Gravy Train". The U.S.P.S.
This is his story. Of how he died when the thing he loved most in the world - sorting the mail on a moving train - was taken away from him. Leaving only my memory of him.
Will Bevis.

When you pick a hero, let him be a great one.
Everybody needs a hero, but not everyone has the sense to select wisely. This was not the case for Will: his hero was Trail-Man Brown, a most extraordinary gentleman. Train-Man Brown was an exceptional train man, and a mighty fine friend to a fledgling mail carrier.
Read the story of how Train-Man Brown helped Will when everyone else was laughing behind his back and trying to make the job more difficult for him. Also see how much and why Will admired his new friend.
This is a marvelous story that will take only a few minutes to read but will stay with you for a long, long time. Good stories tend to have that effect on you: they are just something you don't forget.
Train-Man Brown, gone but not forgotten!
This is a perfectly written short which harkens back to days long gone. The remembrance of one man about another not clouded by issues of race or ethnicity. A story of love and admiration between two people who might have never known one another without their mutual work-related bonding. It is a beautiful and heartfelt tale, placed lovingly on the pages as almost a eulogy, and it does just that...it eulogizes a man who had a deep respect and love for his job, something rarely seen these days. A very quick read which will leave you teary-eyed and pining for things long ago lost to the ages. This is a little bit of history with a very personal bent which makes it that much more lovely to read. Don't miss out on this one.
Fascinating and touching story~
Train-Man Brown loved his job sorting the mail aboard the mail train, and he was the best. He started as a young man, working on the mail trains for more than fifty years "... before they'd made him clear out and retire." His father was a train man before him, and when this way of life ended, Walker Brown's entire world collapsed.
I had never heard of the mail trains before reading this short story.
