This week, as we begin Holy Week, we read about the moment of Jesus’s death. It was not the way of first century authors to always explain the significance of what they narrate. In other words, they show, but don’t tell. In the same way Matthew does not spell out for us the meaning of Jesus’s death. Instead, he shows us the circumstances that surrounded the moment he expired, so that when we see it all together we, like the Centurion attending the crucifixion, are left in awe.
