The King is Coming | Corey Abney

Listen Later

In this week’s message from Matthew 21:1–11, we explore the powerful meaning behind Palm Sunday and the moment Jesus entered Jerusalem as the promised King. The crowds welcomed Him with praise and celebration, shouting “Hosanna!” as they recognized Him as the long-awaited Son of David. Yet this moment reveals something deeper about who Jesus truly is and what kind of King He came to be.

Palm Sunday reminds us that every human heart is wired to follow something or someone. Even in a culture that resists the idea of kings, we still elevate people, causes, careers, and achievements to positions of ultimate importance in our lives. Whatever we crown as most important will ultimately control us. The truth is that we were created to live under the authority of a king—but only one King can truly lead us without destroying us.

Matthew’s account of the Triumphal Entry shows that Jesus is not a king caught in crisis, but a King fully in control. Every detail of His entry into Jerusalem fulfills prophecy and reveals His divine mission. Even as He rides toward the cross, Jesus demonstrates complete authority over the events unfolding around Him, moving forward in obedience to the Father and in love for humanity.

But Jesus is also a King of a different kind. Unlike earthly rulers who use power for their own gain, Jesus rules with humility, justice, and sacrificial love. Riding into the city on a donkey—an ancient symbol of royal authority—He shows that His kingdom is not built through oppression but through redemption. He came to bring peace, freedom, and restoration to those who place their trust in Him.

Palm Sunday also points forward to a future promise. The King who came humbly into Jerusalem will one day return in glory as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Though the world may sometimes appear chaotic or uncertain, Scripture reminds us that Jesus is still reigning and His ultimate victory is certain.

In this message, we explore:

✔ Why every person ultimately serves something as the “king” of their life

✔ The danger of crowning temporary things like success, influence, or approval

✔ How the Triumphal Entry shows that Jesus is a King fully in control

✔ Why Jesus is a King of a different kind—ruling with humility and love

✔ What it means to receive Jesus not only as Savior, but also as King

✔ The hope we have knowing Christ will return as the conquering King

✔ Why the victory of Jesus is certain even when the world feels chaotic

Palm Sunday calls us to a personal question: Who is the king of your life? When we surrender our lives to the true King—Jesus Christ—we discover the freedom, purpose, and hope that only His kingdom can bring.
