It's late August, 2019, and Luna stops at the Windy Pass General Store on the Montana-Idaho line—a low-ceilinged place that smells of dust, motor oil, and something else. The old man behind the counter has a story about a knife that vanishes from its display case every time the wind picks up. But it's always back by morning. He tells Luna how he found it in the woods seventy years ago, how it fits her hand perfectly, how he won't sell it. She buys a bottle of water and leaves. On the way out, she catches her reflection in the glass of the knife case. The wind is picking up.
