Welcome to the VERY FIRST episode of "The Lady Doc Podcast."
On this episode, I'm talking with the indomitable mother-daughter duo of Judi Donnelly and Jenny Donnelly Grimshaw. Judi is a 26 year breast cancer survivor who learned shortly after her cancer treatment that she had the BRCA1 mutation. Her daughter, Jenny, also carries the BRCA1 mutation (and is pregnant with her first child, due November 2021!). We talk about the circumstances that let to Judi getting genetic testing in the late 1990s, how Judi disclosed the news to both of her daughters, the differences in their experiences with genetic testing, and their advice to those who are fearful or unsure about getting genetic testing. We also talk a bit about Jenny's pregnancy, her process of doing IVF, and how she and Judi both felt about Jenny doing IVF to give her the family she's always wanted, but giving her children the gift of not having the BRCA mutation using pre-implantation genetic testing.
I met these two through the running world (Jenny is one of my running idols) so we naturally talked a bit about running, too. If you want to hear more of their running story, I highly suggest listening to them on Ali Feller's Ali on the Run Podcast (episode 193).
