Publisher's Summary:
Living on her familys gorgeous lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, clever, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented 14 year old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure....
One midsummers eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest son, Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined, leaving their estate as empty as their broken hearts.
Nearly 60 years later, having enjoyed a long, successful career as an author, Alice is now 80 years old and living in London. Theos case has never been solved, though Alice still harbours a suspicion as to the culprit.
Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfathers house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate - now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone... yet more present than ever.
A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies, this latest novel from a masterful storyteller is spellbinding and satisfying.
Critic Reviews:
"Morton excels at creating absorbing mystery." (People)
"Morton is the master of the atmospheric old-fashioned novel packed with enough stories to fill all the worn satchels in the Milderhurst attic." (Bookpage)

Loved it
Although the ending is a little too tidy, the journey there was very pleasant, the characters fully drawn and the setting magical.
Spellbinding!
The spine-tingling tale keeps the reader mesmerised from start to finish! The overall reading is excellent, but I was a little disappointed at her failure to mimic the different people's voices. Sometimes I found it difficult to know who was supposed to be speaking.
I would recommend Kate Morton's book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery!
Great story but would love a better narrator
I love Kate Morton's stories and I'm so disappointed they're stuck with a poor narrator. The Australian creeping into the poor attempt at an accent is just too irritating (especially as an Aussie!). I wish they'd choose an English narrator so I could fully enjoy the beautiful writing.
Slow
What did you like best about The Lake House? What did you like least?
Narrator was painful. With bad accents and a south african/australlian accent coming through. Bad essex accent. All over acted so very annoying. Story was slow and laborious and spun out, not sure why so many good reviews. Lots of cliches. Would not read another one of her books.
Would you be willing to try another book from Kate Morton? Why or why not?
No
What aspect of Caroline Lees performance might you have changed?
Poor and annoying. Would not listen to another one.
Could you see The Lake House being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
Yes could be. Would be better with better accent - actors and much faster.
The narration is a mess (namely the accents)
...which was very distracting. Each character spoke in at least 4 accents, and bad ones.
