Sermon Notes—"The Last King"

Scripture: Jeremiah 23:1-8

Chapter 23 describes Judah's last king and his reign

1"Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!" declares the Lord. 2Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: "You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord. 3Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord.
Jeremiah 23:1–4 (ESV)

Leaders are ACCOUNTABLE to God for how they care for His flock.

25But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,Matthew 20:25–26 (ESV)

27and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."Matthew 20:27–28 (ESV)

11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10:11 (ESV)

5"Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The Lord is our righteousness.'Jeremiah 23:5–6 (ESV)

Jesus is the righteous king who has made us RIGHTEOUS and will bring RIGHTEOUSNESS to the earth.

21For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)

30But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,1 Corinthians 1:30 (NASB95)

1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1 (ESV)

7"Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when they shall no longer say, 'As the Lord lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,' 8but 'As the Lord lives who brought up and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.' Then they shall dwell in their own land."Jeremiah 23:7–8 (ESV)

The AMAZING things God has done in the past pale in comparison to what He's going to do.

20Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.Ephesians 3:20–21 (NKJV)
