THE LAST KNOCK presents: Surreal Horror

Listen Later

Surreal, Weird, Abstract…

Horror doesn’t have to be a straight and narrow story about monsters and suspense. Keeping things surreal can bring a new dimension to horror storytelling that expands the genre.

The Last Knock takes a closer look at some of the methods behind the movie madness. We’ll look at filmmakers, such as David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and Lars Von Trier to determine why they have chosen a particular off-beat way to tell a tale.

Making Movies Move

A surreal approach to filmmaking doesn’t have to be as vast and profound as Cattet and Forzani’s The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears or Obayashi’s Hausu.

Films, such as Zombie’s The Lord’s of Salem and De Palma’s Sisters, have unique stretches of the bizarre – the surreal – that certainly fits the bill.

But does going surreal work in a genre where suspense reigns supreme?

Find out from our latest foray into terror…

Jack Nance keeps it surreal in David Lynch’s Eraserhead.
