A few weeks back I was reading an article about “The Last Time.” The premise was that one day, we all did something that we didn’t realize we were doing for the last time we ever. Things like the last time I changed Ben’s diaper or the last day that he couldn’t walk. Back in 2006, after a trip to one of my favorite places on the planet, I thought that there was no way I would ever be back. And then in 2018 I went back. In 2000 I thought that I had made my last trip ever to Oklahoma City when I went to my Grandfathers funeral. Then my parents bought burial plots there. In 1998 I left the East Coast, planning very firmly that I would never return. On Friday we leave for a long trip, driving to the East Coast and to Oklahoma to visit our daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren. Then we will see my parents in my ancestral home of Oklahoma City, where I will also try to see my buddy Zack Bayroute at an Oklahoma City Baseball game, the last of which I attended – with my grandfather – was in 1992. All that to say that while there are things that we never realize we did for the last time, there’s no point in dwelling on what we don’t know the future will hold.
