As widely expected, President Park Geun-hye was a no-show on Tuesday as the constitutional court formally launched its impeachment trial against her, who is unlikely to attend any of the subsequent proceedings according to her lawyer. Her loyalists in the Saenuri Party however have found little means of escape, caught in a desperate struggle to save their political careers amid calls for them to resign that have only intensified with the appointment of In Myung-jin as the party’s interim leader.
