Keo, a jovial young hippopotamus, is tricked into a pit by Gouie, a member of a tribe that enjoys eating hippopotamus meat. To escape, Keo promises to return in a year. A year later, Keo returns, larger and stronger, but keeps his word. He is then used as a beast of burden, and exacts his revenge by luring the men into Glinkomok’s cave, a dangerous creature. Finally, Keo tricks Gouie into promising to return and be his slave. Gouie flees, but lives with guilt, for his grandfather had no bones to swear on.
