In the Old Testament, the first grain was given to God at the temple so that the crops were blessed. What you do with your firstfruits sanctifies the rest of the fruit. First is preceding all others in time and in order of importance. When you tithe, you give the firstfruits of your labor to God. Only then can He bless you.
