What does it really mean to lead by example?
This week, I took my son Connor to his first martial arts gym. I thought I was taking him there so he could learn.
Instead, I walked away learning one of the biggest leadership lessons I’ve had in years.
Watching fathers step onto the mats with their sons reminded me that leadership isn’t about standing on the sidelines telling people what to do.
It’s about being willing to look inexperienced.
It’s about embracing discomfort.
It’s about going first.
Whether you’re leading Marines, raising children, coaching athletes, or building a business, the people around you aren’t listening to your words nearly as much as they’re watching your actions.
In this episode we discuss:
• Why leading by example is harder than it sounds
• What martial arts taught me about fatherhood
• Why your team doesn’t care about the leaders you had
• The difference between talking and demonstrating
• Why great leaders stay students forever
If this episode challenged you, share it with someone who’s trying to become a better leader, parent, or mentor.
