Publisher's Summary:
When Skip Granger, the assistant coach for the Washington Redskins, first sees Jesse Smoke, she is on the beach in Belize. And she has just thrown a regulation football a mile.
Granger knows that Smoke's talent is unprecedented for a woman and nearly unparalleled among men. As Granger observes her throughout a season as quarterback for the Washington Divas of the Independent Women's Football League, he decides to sign her to the Redskins, even as he faces losing his job and credibility.
As the first woman on a major NFL team, Jesse Smoke's astounding success places her in the tradition of athletes like Jackie Robinson and Joe Louis. Yet Smoke is quickly faced with her own battles, including the clamor of the press, the violence of her teammates and the institutional resistance that seeks to keep football in the hands of men.
While a female quarterback in the NFL is a fantasy at the moment, Robert Bausch's genius as a writer makes it a highly engaging reality on the page.
Fans of football - and listeners who were just waiting for a player worth getting excited about - will relish Jesse Smoke's journey to the big leagues.

A page turner
Bausch has created a wonderful character in Jesse Smoke. Within the first 50 pages, I found myself rooting her on - and yet unsure of where the story would take me. Jesse's story was compelling and kept me engaged at every turn. I also appreciate the unique voice used to tell the story. In summary, this is a fine piece of writing. And Bausch knows his football, I'll say that too.
Grace, charm and wonderful characters!
A wonderful world in which the Redskins win and people are pure of heart. I loved it. Jesse is endearing and loving with every breath. I was cheering for her and afraid for her all at the same time.
I recommend this book for people who don't know a thing about football. The author makes an overwhelming sport accessible to the most girly of girls (like me!)
A good story about equality and what people should expect from the world, and what they should strive for.
Definitely recommended!!!!!
a good read
a great story--a wonderful football book for anyone who is a fan
Five Stars
Purchased the book because of good reviews. Agree.
Slow start, powerful ending
I first saw this novel while looking through a bookstore. I did what I normally do when I find a book that intrigues me: I take a picture and forget about it. Months later, I finally got around to checking this one out and I wasnât disappointed. The Legend of Jesse Smoke is a novel set in the near future. Skip Granger, the offensive coach for the Washington Redskins, has found a new quarterback to recruit...who is a girl. Though joking at first, he comes to realize quickly that Jesse has what it takes to make it in the NFL: footwork, intuition, the ability to lead a team. But not everyone is quick to accept her. Her new teammates are skeptical, the press shares scandalous stories questioning her gender and who sheâs dating, and the NFL commissioner is not pleased to have someone âtainting the purity of the game.â The trouble boils all season and culminates in a trial that may prevent Jesse from continuing her career. It was an interesting read but one that did take awhile to get into. The beginning is mired down with football procedures, plays, and terms that the author feels compelled to explain.
