The Legend of Nanaue

Listen Later

Traditionally, amongst native Hawaiians, sharks are revered.

Yet the Hawaiian shark god, Nanaue, is feared. This poem, penned by Sasha Tobago, explains why that is.

Sasha Note:

Years ago, while working on my documentary, ‘Hawaii: Adventure Will Follow,’ I learned about Nanaue. Initially, I penned this poem as the documentary’s opening sequence. This poetic ‘darling’ got cut during the editing process, but the haunting beauty of its words lives on.
