DAVOS- WEF

In his keynote address today, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Donald Trump delivered a combative speech touting what he errantly described as “America’s economic resurgence” under his leadership, while sharply criticizing European allies and reviving contentious foreign policy demands.
The barb-filled, truth-defying, almost comedic, 45-minute talk emphasized what Trump insanely described as “U.S. strength through tariffs”, NATO changes (not big changes, when it comes to NATO members really paying more for defense, the US still pays nearly 64% of that budget), and a bold push for control over Greenland, framing these as essential for global security and American interests.
On NATO, Trump lambasted the alliance as outdated and unfair, claiming the U.S. had shouldered “virtually 100%” of its costs until his interventions forced higher defense spending from members (spending that is only a tiny fraction higher and will, undoubtedly, bring more money into the US Military-Industrial Complex from those member nations). He argued that grabbing Greenland would, somehow, strengthen NATO by securing Arctic routes against threats from Russia and China (the US already has a treaty with The Netherlands to allow for US military bases all over Greenland, to his claim is empty), calling it a “very small ask” compared to decades of U.S. protection for Europe.
However, Trumpola warned allies: say yes to the handover, and “we’ll be very appreciative,” or no, and “we will remember,” hinting at potential repercussions. And, of course, tariffs featured prominently as a threat. Trump defended his past and proposed new tariff taxes, announcing a 10% import tax starting February on goods from eight European nations supporting Denmark’s resistance to the Greenland transfer. The targeted nations are Denmark (Greenland’s sovereign), Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland—all NATO allies. The 10% tariff applies to “any and all goods” and is additive to existing U.S. import duties, which are reciprocal tariffs imposed under Trump’s trade policies. These “stack” on current levels, potentially raising effective rates to 20-25% initially, then 35-40% if escalated, varying by sector (e.g., exemptions for pharmaceuticals and aerospace). Critics argue it risks transatlantic relations and could prompt EU retaliation, such as reimposing duties on up to $108 billion in U.S. exports.
Trump boasted of using tariffs to “get back” from “unfair trade,” criticizing the EU and tying them directly to the Greenland dispute to pressure negotiations. Central to the speech was Trump’s renewed demand for Greenland, which he described as a “piece of ice” vital for “world peace and protection,” despite its 56,000 inhabitants and Danish sovereignty. He called for “immediate negotiations” but ruled out military force, stating, “I won’t use force,” while insisting it’s “our territory” in North America. Of course, tariffs are backed, by threats of force, “sanctions” against foreigners, and more US piracy.
Labeling Denmark “ungrateful” for WWII aid, Trump argued no other nation could secure Greenland better than the U.S. The remarks ignited transatlantic tensions, with EU leaders questioning Trump’s reliability.
Trump also falsely claimed that China manufactures nearly all wind turbines but has few, if any, domestic wind farms. In remarks to energy executives on January 9, and echoed in this Davos address, Trump asserted China exports them to “suckers” like Europe and the former U.S., while relying on coal and other fuels instead. This claim is mistaken. China leads the world in wind power capacity, installing about 70% of global additions in 2024 and holding nearly 50% of total installed wind capacity (over 520 GW), per the Global Wind Energy Council. It boasts massive onshore and offshore wind farms, far outpacing other nations, while dominating turbine manufacturing (around 60-65%). Trump’s assertion inverts reality: Given that the Chinese government has shown little respect for private property (especially when it comes to dams that flood private farmland and allowing corporations to mine coal), China heavily deploys wind energy domestically alongside coal, not merely exporting to undermine others. Fact-checks from AFP, FactCheck.org, PolitiFact, and CNN label the statement false, highlighting it as a recurring misrepresentation in his anti-renewables rhetoric.
Overall, Trump’s speech blended economic bravado with isolationist threats, underscoring his “America First” agenda amid global unease. Here are some key, pertinent clips and observations:

Trump makes more of a fool of himself.

Italy’s Meloni finally speaks up against Trump. She has been silently acquiescent for a year.

The entire Trump speech, (scroll in to 9 min)

KEY - Trump claimed the US economy is stellar. He is lying. Not only is inflation still near 3% each month on an annualized basis, US manufacturing employment, based on the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data released January 9, 2026, for December 2025 (seasonally adjusted), stands at 12,692,000 jobs. This reflects a decline of 8,000 jobs from November 2025 (12,700,000).
KEY - TRUMP CLAIMED HE LOWERED DRUG EXPENSES — the feds applied PRICE CAPS on drugs bought by Medicare and Medicaid, and now, cost-shifting is being revealed as pharma companies try to make up for lost revenue, shifting to private buyers

-…According to analyses of ICE data from fiscal year 2026 (starting October 1, 2025) and earlier months in 2025 under the second Trump administration, approximately 5% of individuals arrested or detained by ICE have confirmed violent felony convictions. This figure has declined over the course of 2025, dropping from around 9% in January to less than 5% by October-December. Data on warrants specifically for violent felonies (often tied to pending charges) is not broken out in detail across sources, but pending charges overall account for about 20-30% of ICE arrests or detentions, with only a small subset likely involving violent felonies given the low conviction rates for such crimes.
-ICE uses Brake-Check, quick stops to draw rear-end collisions, giving them a prompt to threaten those behind them who might have been honking horns, etc., to sound alarm about the ICE invasion.

-AND THE BIGGIE? As Natali Morris of Redacted writes:

Congress has unveiled yet another last-minute spending bill to avert a government shutdown that would begin in February. The package weighs in at roughly $1.7 trillion, fully funding the federal government through the end of September. It’s a massive omnibus that locks in spending for the rest of the year and kicks every hard budget fight down the road until fall.

The bill was put forward by both parties, which means it’s unlikely to spark a long, drawn-out fight. When leadership on both sides signs on, you can safely assume that everyone’s spending wish list made it in.

And indeed, this thing is a spending behemoth. It doesn’t just fund the basics of keeping the government open. It layers in new programs, expanded defense initiatives, foreign security commitments, and long-term authorizations that would never survive as standalone bills. By bundling everything together, Congress insulates controversial line items from scrutiny and pushes them through under the pressure of an artificial crisis.

Here’s the real kick in the pants: Remember the health-care eligibility fight Republicans made such a big deal about in the last spending showdown? The one they swore was about stopping permanent expansions of pandemic-era programs?

It’s gone.

Those “temporary” pandemic expansions in health and welfare programs are now effectively baked in as permanent costs for taxpayers. That hard-fought battle last fall? Turns out it was just theater. For fun, right?

And here is another kick in the pants: Buried several hundred pages deep is something Congress apparently considers non-negotiable: money for Israel.

Flip to page 101 of 1,059 and you’ll find provisions allocating hundreds of millions of dollars for Israeli missile-defense programs, including Iron Dome and other joint U.S.–Israel systems. Once again, Congress has structured things so that funding the U.S. government also requires funding another country’s defense infrastructure.

They sold us down the river with this one and both sides keep doing it.
