SHUTDOWN OF THE SO-CALLED FEDERAL “SHUTDOWN”?
The US Senate today (as we go to print) debating an end to the filibuster (EDIT: THE PROPOSAL JUST PASSED in the SENATE and Johnson thinks the GOP has the votes in the House LINK), reducing the vote threshold to stop Senators from using speeches to block votes on bills. Each party in power has proposed ending this filibuster-buster, as they both pursue their thirst for more of our tax-blood and more power over the private sector (what is left of it mostly is in black and gray markets). HERE ARE KEY FACTORS IN THE “FEDERAL FUNDING” DEBATE…
- The “Nuclear Option”: The “nuclear option” refers to a Senate procedural maneuver to override the filibuster rule (which requires 60 votes for most legislation) via a simple majority vote, potentially allowing budget or shutdown resolutions to pass without bipartisan support. In the current context, some Republicans, including Rep. Chip Roy and President Trump, have floated using it to break the shutdown stalemate by eliminating the 60-vote threshold for appropriations bills. Trump has publicly urged Senate Republicans to deploy it, arguing it would prevent Democratic “obstruction” and enable quicker passage of GOP priorities. However, prospects for invoking it remain low. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has explicitly ruled it out, stating Republicans won’t “touch the filibuster” to end the shutdown, citing risks of long-term institutional damage and potential Democratic retaliation in future majorities (no, really?). While the idea has gained traction among a frustrated faction of shutdown-weary GOP senators amid the 41-day non-crisis, broader party leadership views it as a last resort unlikely to materialize before a negotiated deal. If the current bipartisan “continuing resolution” (also known as “conjuring resolution”) passes, discussions may fade; otherwise, pressure could mount if the impasse extends into December.
- The GOP ObamaCare Fakeout: Well, well! It sure is strange to see that health insurance rates rise when government thugs tell business owners and individuals they MUST get health insurance and then the government thugs tell insurance companies that they MUST carry people regardless of risk. Odd that upward cost spiral which, of course, pushes people to switch onto the government-provided plans in their states that all are part of the 2010 ObamaCare “Network”. The enhanced premium tax credits (PTCs) under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often called Obamacare subsidies, were introduced in the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act to make “marketplace health insurance more affordable.” Of course, that “marketplace” term is what the government pushers use to describe exactly the OPPOSITE of a market — the government-created, bureaucratic welfare system of Obamacare handout tiers. Extended through the end of 2025 by the 2022 so-called “Inflation Reduction Act,” these temporary provisions expand eligibility and increase subsidy amounts beyond the original ACA formula. Key features include:
Eligibility: Available to individuals and families with incomes up to 400% of the federal poverty level (about $58,320 for an individual in 2025), but enhanced versions remove the upper income cap for premium assistance.
Benefits: Subsidies cap premiums at 8.5% of household income (down from 9.83% pre-2021), with many low- and middle-income enrollees paying $10 or less monthly—or $0 for those below 150% of poverty. This has covered ~90% of the 21 million ACA marketplace enrollees in 2025.
Impact: Without extension, average premiums could more than double in 2026 (to $20 per month for the lower wage earners, and from $138 to $302 monthly for a benchmark silver plan), potentially causing 4–5 million people to lose coverage, especially in Republican-led states like Florida, Texas, and Georgia.
As of this afternoon, the subsidies are set to expire December 31 without legislative action, fueling the shutdown debate. The emerging Senate deal includes a commitment for a December vote on extension legislation, but Republicans seek reforms like redirecting funds to direct payments or health savings accounts (HSAs) rather than “enriching insurance companies.” No standalone extension bill has passed, and prospects hinge on post-shutdown negotiations.
— WHAT DO GOP COLLECTIVISTS WANT FOR “OBAMACARE”? Key proposals include:
Redirect Subsidies: Convert ACA funds into direct cash payments to individuals (e.g., $5,000–$10,000 per person annually) for use in HSAs or private plans, bypassing the Obamacare “marketplaces” and Obamacare-okayed insurers. This aims to promote “skimpier, lower-cost” policies with high deductibles.
State Flexibility: Expand block grants to states for Medicaid (ACA’s coverage expansion arm), allowing tailored programs over federal mandates—potentially cutting federal spending by $500–$800 billion over a decade.
Short-Term Fixes: Permit broader sale of short-term, non-ACA-compliant plans and association health plans to undercut marketplace premiums without subsidies.
Ties to Broader Agenda: Integrate into budget reconciliation (e.g., the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” passed by House Republicans in June 2025), which would cap Medicaid growth (notice that they mix the metaphors, claiming to “cap” growth — thus allowing the growth, while claiming to cap it, this is a smokescreen that allows for increases, year-on-year) and repeal some ACA taxes, though Senate filibuster risks remain.
Critics argue these lack their vaunted and impossible “universal coverage” goals, potentially increasing uninsured rates by 10–15 million. Some moderate Republicans support extending enhanced subsidies temporarily but with reforms, reflecting internal divisions exposed by the shutdown. And, it seems, only KY Congressman Thomas Massie reminds people of how unconstitutional the entire frozen federal entree is. - Once the Senate passes the bill today, it returns to the House for concurrence; Speaker plans to call a vote by November 11 if needed, but unified GOP support is uncertain amid Trump’s influence.
— The SIZE of the FEDERAL BUDGET: The U.S. federal budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 (October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025) operated under a full-year “CR” signed by Trumpola on March 15, 2025, after Congress failed to pass the 12 individual appropriations bills. Total federal spending reached $7.01 trillion, equivalent to 23% of GDP (for comparison, the average govt-spending-to-GDP ratio for the BRICS nations is 18.25% for Brazil, 18.47% for Russia, 10.14% for India, and 15.58 % for China), while the budget deficit was estimated at $1.8 trillion—slightly lower than the prior year’s $1.808 trillion. Discretionary spending was capped at $1.606 trillion under the Fiscal Responsibility Act, with a 1% increase over FY 2024 levels for base defense and non-defense categories. Today is the 41st day of the impasse—the longest in U.S. history, surpassing the 35-day 2018–2019 shutdown. This lapse affects non-essential services, with over 2 million federal workers furloughed or working without pay, and affects programs like SNAP benefits, national parks, and air traffic control — all of which are unconstitutional...
INTEREST ON THE FEDERAL DEBT SOON WILL DOMINATE ALL FEDERAL TAX RECEIPTS
-Net interest payments on the national debt are a growing burden, driven by higher rates and debt levels (~$37 trillion as of late 2025, or 126% of annual GDP [29.4 Tril for 2025]). For FY 2025:
Nominal Amount: Estimated at $952–$970 billion, up from $870 billion in FY 2024, marking the highest in nominal terms (eclipsing pandemic-era peaks adjusted for inflation).
As Percentage of Budget: Approximately 13.6–13.8% of total federal outlays ($7.01 trillion), or 3.2% of GDP—the largest share since 1947 outside wartime.
Average Interest Rate: 3.39–3.41% on marketable debt, with ~20% of outstanding debt refinancing in FY 2025 at these elevated rates.
CBO projects interest costs will exceed $1 trillion annually by FY 2026 and reach 3.3% of GDP by 2055, crowding out other spending if deficits persist.

US ECONOMY - PRICES KEEP RISING, WHILE TRUMP OFFICIALS CLAIM THE OPPOSITE
- One of Trump’s goonmeisters recently appeared on TV and claimed that prices are going DOWN. (YES! THERE’S VIDEO!! :)) Here are some key facts that show how absurd such a statement is. LINK
- Yet, of course, when people inevitably bring up to Trump the price of beef in the US, he blames the domestic farmers/ranchers. LINK (See yesterday’s Sunday News Assembly for refutations of Trump’s basis — to see how his tariffs are driving up prices!) !!!!
- Trump and some of his lackeys are pushing a change in the federal statutes to allow HUD to offer FIFTY-YEAR HOME LOANS. First, the feds are not supposed to be offering ANY kinds of loans. Second, this is a smoke-and-mirrors game similar to the “variable rate” mortgages circa 2000-2006 that people got to buy homes. Trump is trying to artificially increase demand for homes, but the 50-year mortgage idea will make people more like renters, decrease the equity they might build under shorter-term loans, and see overall costs for the mortgages increase over the term of the loans.
