Here are some of the big news stories we got to cover tonight!
US GOVT - SHUTDOWN, NOT:
Yesterday, in a 60-40 vote, the U.S. Senate passed a “stopgap” spending package, ending the longest federal government non-shutdown at 41 days. The bill, a “minibus” combining three fiscal year 2026 appropriations measures, funds the Department of Agriculture and FDA, Veterans Affairs, military construction (a new base proposed for Gaza, another in Damascus, and the rebuild in Puerto Rico), and congressional operations at current levels. A simultaneously passed “continuing resolution” extends funding for all other federal agencies through January 30, 2026. The package also mandates back pay and rehiring for furloughed workers, prohibiting further layoffs until the deadline. Overall spending maintains fiscal year 2025 baselines without new boosts, totaling roughly $1.7 trillion in discretionary outlays prorated to January—though exact figures remain fluid pending House approval expected by tomorrow afternoon (they will throw at us any number they like, of course). The deal was “brokered” by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), and Angus King (I-ME).
The bill does not extend the expiring health insurance subsidies added in 2021 to the Affordable Care Act (we got to dig into those last night on Liberty Conspiracy, and you will find details in yesterday’s News Notes) that Democrats really wanted. Buuuut… A key Democratic win secures a mid-December Senate vote on extending the enhanced subsidies, which bolster premium tax credits for millions and are set to expire December 31.
The bill now heads to the House of Representatives where it will likely clear enough votes to pass before heading to the President’s desk. He is expected to sign it as early as tomorrow night. LINK
AL SHARAA’S WH VISIT
Yep. While the US purportedly was “unfunded” Mr. Trump welcomed the man whom US “authorities” claimed was a “terrorist” last year but who now rules Syria for the US and Israel. He’s the man whose hands recently held severed heads in front of cameras, Ahmad Al Jolani, aka Al Sharaa. Glenn Greenwald offers key thoughts about the appearance, which was almost as stomach-turning as the sycophantic retired gen Patraeus kissing-up to Sharaa a couple months ago.
