And I want to be sure to note that the latest GDP data is the second estimate for Q4 2025 (October–December 2025), released on March 13, by the BEA.
Real GDP grew at an annualized rate of 0.7% in Q4 2025, revised down from the initial 1.4% estimate and much weaker than Q3 2025’s 4.4% growth.
This slowdown reflected drastic revisions to consumer spending, business investment, exports, and dollar liquidity that went abroad being sucked up by US bonds.
For full-year 2025, real GDP growth was around 2.2% (annual level change from 2024). THAT IS BELOW EVEN THEIR ANNUAL INFLATION ESTIMATE.
No Q1 2026 advance estimate is available yet (typically released late April). Nowcasts like the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow (as of today) suggest Q1 2026 growth around 2.3%, but this is preliminary and subject to change. The sharp Q4 slowdown signals a cooling economy entering 2026.
And… The latest Employment Situation report, released March 6, covers February 2026.
Nonfarm payrolls declined by 92,000 jobs, far worse than expectations of around +50,000–60,000 and following a revised +126,000 gain in January.
This was the largest monthly drop in several months and widespread, with losses in health care (due to strike activity), information, federal government, and other sectors.
The unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.4% (from 4.3% in January).
This, atop a 770,000 APPX downward revision in employment counting from Jan 2025 to the open of Feb, 2026.
This is interesting…
TRUMP V. MARKET INTEREST RATES
Curiously, Mr. Trump has no problem pushing us into higher expenditures for oil, foreign imports, and things associated with them, even as he works to inflate the money supply ever-more — but he does those things as he adopts the pretense of wanting to “help” consumers who might own and use credit cards. Trump’s desire to “cap” credit card rates not only is unconstitutional, it threatens a key voluntary option some people might choose over pay-day loans or black-market loans. The complicating factors of the credit card companies being given corporate status by the federal government, and, thus seeing their board members and owners shielded from asset liability should their corporations mess up and hurt people, and the fact that these credit card companies are usually tied to banks that are tied to the central banking system — those are problems, but if one looks at the issue of interest for loans as a unique matter of conversation, this piece helps one understand how important loaning for interest is.
