Formed in 1982–1985 by Shia Palestinians, Lebanese, and residents of the West Bank, during the Israeli occupation of Lebanon after the 1967 War w Lebanon and a renewed Israeli attempt to take the land in 1982, Hezbollah positioned itself as an armed resistance movement to end what it called foreign occupation of Lebanese territory. Drawing support from disaffected Shiites in the south and Bekaa Valley, Hezbollah waged a guerrilla campaign of ambushes, rockets, and bombings against Israeli forces and proxies until the 2000 withdrawal, which it claimed as victory. It has since evolved into a major political and military force in Lebanon while continuing in a conflict with aggressive Israel. The “Negotiators” in DC are embracing Israel’s desire to “disarm” Hezbollah, which will not happen, will see resistance and a possible civil was in Lebanon — something Israeli land-grabbers want.
(NOTE: After fleeing to Lebanon from Jordan, the PLO did not focus on “fighting to return control of southern Lebanon to the Lebanese away from Israel.” Instead, it established another “state within a state” (nicknamed “Fatahland”) in the south, using the area as a launchpad for cross-border raids, rockets, and attacks on Israel. This autonomy, combined with clashes against Lebanese Christian militias and the Lebanese army, helped ignite and fuel Lebanon’s 1975–1990 civil war.
