You really can make a difference in the world around you. It seems like the world is getting darker and darker as we wake up each morning: the news and killings, the lives being lost in such senseless ways.

Hate is so thick and dark that you can feel it closing in in on you. It is indeed a dark world. But I've come to understand that darkness results from the absence of light. When light is absent, darkness is present, and darkness rules where there is no light.

Jesus says in the text today, I am the light of the world, and whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Jesus in us is the light of life; it is the bearing of life in our veins; there's still light in the world because you and I are here, but why is there so much darkness because there's so much hate?

We probably need to shine our lights and bring love into the world, starting with our churches and worship communities. Listen, Your life in Christ can shine like a light in the spiritual darkness of the world around you. As Martin Luther King said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Family, only light can drive out the darkness in our world; it is really dark. I've never seen such darkness, but the love of Christ, which is the light of life, can drive out the darkness of hate.
