Today’s Scripture:
John 8:12 NIV
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
The light of life speaks of his truth, his word, and eternal life. Thus, if we follow him, we have light, but if we do not follow him, we walk in spiritual darkness and are without eternal life.
Plants are phototropic, so that means they grow toward to sun or away from it, or they grow toward the light or away from it? I have proven this over several years with our plants. I would see them growing toward the light of the sun, and I would turn them because if I don't turn them, they grow in one direction of the light, and so turning them cause them to grow straight and not crooked.
I wonder what we are following when we refuse to grow. Light will always produce life. Darkness will always produce death or lack of growth and lack of life. Turning to fellowship, prayer, and the word of God causes us to grow spiritually. Doing these things brings us light and growth in Christ. The unbeliever is not so. They hate the light because it exposes their evil.
So, light exposes and reveals the truth. Follow the light that leads to eternal life in Christ. Follow Christ.
Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Light was an important symbol in the Feast of Tabernacles. During the feast, many emblems and ceremonies remembered the pillar of fire that gave light to Israel during the Exodus. Now, Jesus took this important symbol and applied it to Himself: I am the light of the world.
He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness: Jesus, being the light of the world, brings light to those who follow Him. When we follow Him, we stay in the light and do not walk in darkness. In other words, we live right according to His Word. The Hebrew Scriptures often spoke of God’s Word as light.
Jesus is the light that we must follow so that we will not stumble but that we may live a complete and whole life. We follow many things today, and sometimes we follow things blindly, but we cannot be ignorant about our salvation. We must follow the light of life. This light of Christ gives us eternal life.
Without it, we are doomed to hell and eternal darkness. I encourage us today to let the light of Christ lead us into all truth and live above the darkness of hate, sin, shame, and disgrace. Jesus is the light of the world, and you are his reflection; be the light of Christ in the earth.
