THE LINDBERGH KIDNAPPING--THE CASE THAT WON'T GO AWAY

Episode 17 of Season 2 is the first of a two-part episode on the Lindbergh kidnapping, a terrible crime that galvanized the nation in March 1932, in the heart of the Depression. In Part 1, we recap the details of Charles Lindbergh Jr's kidnapping, the 20-month-old son of global hero Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly the Atlantic in 1927 successfully. Charlie Jr., known as 'The Eaglet' (his father was nicknamed 'Lucky Lindy' or 'The Lone Eagle'), was taken from his crib at the family home in New Jersey on a blustery cold winter night. The police acceded to Lindbergh's demand that HE take charge of the entire investigation. The ransom note demanded $50,000 in unmarked bills. Using a retired self-important schoolteacher from the Bronx as the go-between, Lindy made the ransom drop in early April.

The child was not recovered.

A month later, a truck driver stopping in the New Jersey woods to relieve himself found a child's remains, which animals had ravaged. Lindbergh identified the body as his son and ordered his immediate cremation.

A German carpenter in the Bronx was eventually arrested and charged with the crime after he paid for gas with one of the gold certificates the police had managed to mark as part of the ransom.  With public outcry at its height and even Lindbergh identifying him in the courtroom as the man he'd heard at the ransom drop, Richard Bruno Hauptmann was judged guilty and sentenced to die in the electric chair.

But what really happened to the Lindbergh baby? This case has haunted the American psyche for almost 90 years.

Part I is only the beginning...
