Publisher's Summary:
Ruth was a ghost of a girl when she arrived into foster mother Maggie Hartley's care. Pale, frail, and withdrawn, it was clear to Maggie that Ruth had seen and experienced things that no 11-year-old should have to, that she's been conditioned to "see no evil, speak no evil". Ruth is in desperate need of help, but can Maggie get through to her and unlock the harrowing secret she carries?
Through love, reassurance, and patience, Maggie starts to unravel Ruth's painful past - a past defined by cruelty and abuse by the very people who should have protected her. Raised by a cruel stepmother and her father after her own mum abandoned her, Ruth was abused, underfed, and ignored, while her half-siblings lived a life of luxury.
It's up to Maggie to help Ruth find her voice; to be a ghost no more, and bring those who've harmed her to justice.
Members Reviews:
Hard but good story
I enjoyed this book much like I do Toree Haydenâs books. The abuse and neglect these children suffer is horrific, but hearing of the love and support they get from their carers is beautiful. Itâs especially heart warming to see the child begin to heal. I wish this kind of abuse never happened, but seeing that not all children are doomed because of it is powerful.
Great author
What shes doing for these kids is incredible and ruths bravery and the ending was definetely inspiring wish the foster mothers were all like her
Emotional
A story so gripping it will unexpectedly pull on your emotions in many directions. I felt as if I personally all involved in the story.
Sad story but worth reading
I think Maggie Hartley may be the most kind hearted person I've read about. Her love and dedication to children is remarkable.
Heartbreaking and heartwarming
As are so of these stories...
What more can I say?
I love these stories, but hate them at the same time...
