Chapter 1 Part 1 DAVID AND I SET FORTH UPON A JOURNEY. The narrator opens up the story with how a boy named David, who likes to call him father, invites him to his mothers birthday. He rejects the invitation and says he has never spoken a word to her. He then goes on to tell us about how David's mother is giving him unwanted flirtatious attention and that his heart is taken by another woman he dreams about, whom he no longer sees in his daily life.
