October 1998. A small-town volunteer night shift at St. Dymphna's Psychiatric Hospital in Ashland, Nebraska. Luna's first time alone on Ward 3—the long-term wing where patients are supposed to be asleep by nine. But just past midnight, a woman in the day room begins humming a lullaby into the phone. The line is dead. The nurses' station logbooks show the room has been empty for eleven years. Luna goes to check, and the door is unlocked.
