This week on The Shiver Show, we take you on a wander down the foggy streets of Victorian London with The Lodger (1948) - a chilling episode from the legendary Suspense series.
Set in the working-class district of Whitechapel, fear grips the city as a shadowy killer known only as “The Avenger” stalks the night. Into this atmosphere of dread comes a mysterious new tenant—Mr Sleuth, played (and narrated) by Robert Montgomery. Quiet, intensely religious, and more than a little unsettling, Mr Sleuth arrives with few possessions, a stack of identical suits, and a habit of quoting scripture.
Jeanette Nolan delivers a strong performance as Ellen Bunting, the wary landlady, while Peggy Weber plays her step-daughter Daisy, whose naivety adds to the tension. Lucien Moraweck’s haunting music underscores this dread tale.
Written by Marie Belloc Lowndes, an English author and suffragette, The Lodger is a masterclass in suspense.
