Publisher's Summary:
During the bloody battle for Guadalcanal, one Army unit's mission to infiltrate enemy lines to arm and train a guerrilla force of natives goes horribly wrong.
The 164th Army Division has come to reinforce the beleaguered First Marine Division, which has been fighting the Japanese for months. It will be the Division's first combat test as well as it's bloodiest.
The fighting has come to a standstill with neither side giving ground. The 164th is desperate to break the stalemate and the mounting casualties.
Their possible solution comes in the form of a British Coast Watcher. Thomas Welch offers to take a small unit into the jungle to meet up with a force of natives to instigate a guerrilla war against the Japanese rear.
A unit from Able Company is selected for the job. Each man's been battle tested, defending Henderson field from hordes of attacking Japanese. The mission goes badly from the outset and the unit is cutoff and desperate to continue their mission.
As the battle for Guadalcanal rages on, their mission changes. As more men fall, the likelihood of completing it is slipping away. Betrayed, alone and hurt, they find themselves as the only soldiers able to deliver victory from the jaws of defeat.

As close to ground war for Guadalcanal as you can get in a work of fiction
This book was so graphic in the beginning I almost didn't read it. I am glad I stuck it out. My great uncle served in the Army in the Pacific and died in a Japanese pow camp. So I have always been into the Pacific war. It amazes me Japan has yet to admit or apologize for their war crimes. Anyway save a few things like referring to the "rudders" plural on an f4u which only has one rudder should say rudder pedals yes I am a pilot drove me nuts! Also at times characters used some modern slang like "he's gone native" it was well written. Great character development and depth with characters. Hope Chris writes more about the Pacific war.
Good pacing.
Action is realistic. Plot and action keeps you interested in plot development. Fighting scenes are very realistically described. You can smell the blood, rot and defecation. The cordite and sounds of explosions and concussive blast waves are described.
U.S. Forces in the all but impossible battle for Guadalcanal in1942, only a few months after Pearl Harbor.
The Long PATROL was well written, with exciting characters and a very believable plot. WW II has always been a major interest of mine since both my brother's served; one in Europe, the other in the Pacific. The brother in the Pacific was on the USS Lunga Point an Escort/Jeep Carrier, named after the battle for Guadalcanal's airfield, Henderson Field, mentioned in this book.
My other brother was a tail gunner on a B 17, lost on a bombing raid on industrial targets in Munich, Germany, July 31, 1944. He didn't come home.
I appreciate Chris's representation of our troops in their fight for Guadalcanal.
An Entertaining Read
I normally prefer to read nonfiction but I do enjoy a well thought out novel like this one. I thought it was well written and easy to follow with plenty of fact based information to keep it from being total fantasy.
