The Long Road to a Good Question (with Tim Myers)

Listen Later

(This episode is in English)
Tim Myers never planned on becoming the first permanent researcher at CRM. He was looking for something simpler. An office with a view. Mountains nearby. The sea not too far. Family within reach. Fifteen years later, he is still here, in Barcelona, deeply involved in several committees of mathematics institutions across Europe and working with researchers around the world.
In this episode, we talk about what it means to do mathematics that industries can actually use. Tim traces his path through aircraft icing, phase change problems, broken assumptions, and fieldwork in places where resources are thin. We also talk about bad science, why it spreads, and why Ben Goldacre’s 'Bad Science' should sit on every scientist’s desk.
Book recommendation: Bad Science, Ben Goldacre
Film recommendation: Cube (1997). Mathematics, gore, strangers, bad decisions.
